Jobboard Finder’s opinion

Summary: Founded by Jérémy Hodara and Sacha Poignonnec in 2012 in Nigeria, Jumia is a recognized African brand for online purchases, among other things. The official name of the group was Africa Internet Express (AIGX), but after a rebranding initiative in 2016, the subgroups all became Jumia something, and now the group is known as JumiaServices. The current headquarters are in Paris. EverJobs, created in 2015, and launched in Cameroon, is one of those subgroups, which became Jumia Jobs. Present in four African countries (Cameroon, the Ivory Coast, Senegal and Uganda), Jumia is the 19th most visited website in the Senegal with 386 550 views recorded every month (that doesn’t refer exclusively to the job section). In fact, there are sections for housing, car, shopping, market, flight, travel, food, deals (classifieds) and jobs. On Facebook, it has 139 115 followers. The website is available in English in French. A success story? Definitely, but the job section could use some attention.

Design: All four homepages are the same: a backdrop image of a black man concentrating on a screen (as if looking for work) and a search engine (keywords and locations) over the image. There are featured companies just underneath (most of which are not hiring) and the rest of the homepage is comprised of lists to help jobseekers find jobs (search by category, by industry, by company, by city and the number of offers for each subcategory is in brackets). Unfortunately, there are a number of blanks in the “About Us” section (partners and supporting websites) and links to the blog articles/advice don’t always work. As for the job offers, the listing displays the location, the publication date, the location and (sometimes) the company name, but no logos. The filters include the location, the publication date, the company name, the industry, the type of contract, the salary and the job category. Like on a classifieds website, you can browse professional and “individual” job offers.

The job board objective: Jumia Jobs wants to improve the labour market in Africa and utilizes the Jumia brand to attract jobseeker and recruiter attention.

Recruiter observations: It’s easy for recruiters to create an account and to create the advert. Then, you send your request to the team, and they contact you (and approve the order) once they’ve reviewed the post. There is a CV database and the pricing information is on the website.

Jobseeker observations: As a jobseeker, an account is not required to apply to job offers. If you wish to create an account, all you need is Facebook, Linkedin or an e-mail address.

The job offers: Other, sales and marketing are the top categories on this particular job board. The homepage also includes a list of the most popular jobs (including translator, concierge and counselor). There are 365 professional offers and 2 185 personal offers (that are all in “other”).

Reactivity: The form doesn’t work, but contact information is available through the recruiter portal.

Special features: The views on the articles; the blog (no articles since last year, but there are a number of subsections and some information is still relevant); promoting other people’s job offers; popular searches.

Verdict: The rebranding within the JumiaServices was only carried out two years ago. Hopefully, some focus will be redirected to Jumia Jobs. Until then, the job board is handy, but it is in need of updates and some TLC (blog articles, working links, etc.).
