Sociopolitical situation<\/h2>\n

Socio-political difficulties exist in South Korea as a result of the relationship with its neighbour North Korea<\/strong>. These two countries are still technically at war<\/strong> (having never signed a peace treaty after the Korean War), although not actively, and relations are tense,<\/strong> with animosity still ongoing. Relations with former coloniser Japan<\/strong> are also complicated and strained.<\/p>\n

Culturally, for Koreans, education<\/strong> is a focal<\/strong> point. A significant part of the country\u2019s GDP is funnelled into education, as citizens see it as the biggest propeller of social mobility.<\/strong> This strong investment in education is reflected in the highly educated and skilled workforce<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Current state of the job market<\/h2>\n

South Korea\u2019s strong investment in education<\/strong> coupled with its drive for success<\/strong> and excellence have contributed to the rapid<\/strong> economic growth<\/strong> that the resource-poor<\/strong> country has seen in the 70 years since it gained independence from Japan, in a period of unprecedented transformation<\/strong> described as the \u2018Miracle of the Han river\u2019.<\/p>\n

South Korea\u2019s unemployment rate is currently at 4%<\/strong>, however young people especially face intense competition for graduate jobs<\/strong> with the most attractive companies. The country\u2019s largest industries are those of electronics<\/strong> and telecommunications<\/strong>, but there is also work in automobiles, chemicals, shipbuilding and steel.<\/p>\n

The steep competition<\/strong> in the job market and oversupply of workforce<\/strong> mean that workers often put in long hours of hard work<\/strong>. Despite this, the government has capped the legal working limit to 40 hours a week<\/strong>, although this is sometimes ignored.<\/p>\n

Visa\/ permits needed<\/h2>\n

According to many people, unless are Korean-born or you\u2019re married to a Korean, it can be really difficult to get an job as a foreigner<\/strong>. Many foreigners will work in South Korea in teaching<\/strong> but it can be very hard to secure alternative work<\/strong> if this is a field you aren\u2019t interested in.<\/p>\n

However, if you have specific<\/strong> skills<\/strong> that Koreans cannot fulfil then you might get lucky. Alternatively you could work for a multinational<\/strong> corporation<\/strong> with offices in Seoul, for example.<\/p>\n

If you do secure a job in South Korea, you need to be sponsored for a long-term visa by your employer<\/strong>. Upon your arrival you also have to obtain an Alien Registration Certificate<\/strong> from the Immigration Office.<\/p>\n

Plus, if you are planning to leave the country and re-enter you will also need to secure a Multiple Re-Entry Permit\u00a0<\/strong>upon your arrival and prior to departure from South Korea.<\/p>\n

Restrictions<\/h2>\n

The hourly minimum wage is 6470 Korean won (US$5.70)<\/strong>, while the average worker earns an average salary of $32,399 per year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Korea has one of the highest average work weeks and overtime hours in the world<\/strong>, which can contribute to high work-related stress<\/strong> levels and burnout<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
