Hong Kong: history and geography<\/h2>\n

Hong Kong is located on China’s south coast<\/strong>. It is east of Macau on the opposite side of the Pearl River Delta. Hong Kong is an autonomous<\/strong> territory<\/strong> in China. While it is not a different country, the two places are governed differently which is why it is often referred to as a \u2018one country, two system\u2019<\/strong> structure.<\/p>\n

Hong Kong has a population<\/strong> of near 7.2 million<\/strong> in a territory of just 1,104 km2<\/sup>, making it the world’s fourth most densely populated<\/strong> country or territory.\u00a0The languages spoken in Hong Kong are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Cantonese<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>English<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A large proportion of Hong Kong’s terrain is hilly<\/strong> or mountainous<\/strong>, resulting in less than 25%<\/strong> of the territory’s landmass being developed. About 40% of the land area is reserved as country parks and nature reserves. The territory has little arable land and few natural resources, so it imports most of its food<\/strong> and raw<\/strong> materials<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Political and social background<\/h2>\n

Hong Kong is one of the world’s leading international<\/strong> financial<\/strong> centres<\/strong>, and as such has a major capitalist service economy which is characterised by low<\/strong> taxation<\/strong> and free trade<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With a GDP per capita of US$43,473, it is an easy place to do business<\/strong> and trade<\/strong>. The service sector dominates the economy. Although economically beneficial for businesses, Hong Kong is considered to be an expensive place to live<\/strong>. The cost of living is particularly expensive because housing can cost a lot owing to the high population density<\/strong>, meaning plentiful living<\/strong> space<\/strong> is very costly.<\/p>\n

The territory is a meeting point of both Asian<\/strong> and Western<\/strong> cultures<\/strong>, from its historical relationship with Britain. This combination of cultures make the city a dynamic and vibrant<\/strong> place.<\/p>\n

Hong Kong also boasts its own Disneyland<\/strong> theme park, visited by tourists<\/strong> from all over the world.<\/p>\n

Current job market<\/h2>\n

In terms of business<\/strong> language<\/strong>, in Hong Kong this is often carried out in English<\/strong>. With that said, it is a definite competitive advantage to speak Cantonese<\/strong> on top of this.<\/span><\/p>\n

The unemployment<\/strong> rate is at 3.1%<\/strong>. Despite this there is a high level of income inequality<\/strong>, with the minimum hourly wage failing to cover basic amenities.<\/p>\n

The typical working week is 9\u20135 weekdays<\/strong> (or longer, depending on the business), with an occasional half-day required on Saturday. Workers regularly put in long<\/strong> hours<\/strong> and overtime<\/strong>, with this sometimes reaching 50+ hours a week<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Public transport<\/strong> is very efficient<\/strong>, clean<\/strong> and cheap<\/strong>, and the cost of parking spaces mean that many people don\u2019t own a car<\/strong>, which is something to take into consideration.<\/p>\n

Visa and permits needed<\/h2>\n

To work here, you will generally need to be sponsored<\/strong> by an employer for your work permit<\/strong>. British citizens<\/strong> can visit the area Visa-less for up for 6 months<\/strong> but in order to secure employment you have to have the correct visa. To obtain this, you must generally possess specialist skills, knowledge or experience<\/strong> of value to, and not readily available in, Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

You will typically need to have a job offer before<\/strong> you travel to Hong Kong and if you find a job when you’re in the country you’ll have to leave and re-enter on the correct visa.<\/p>\n

There is also the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme (QMAS<\/strong>) which attracts highly skilled<\/strong> people to settle in Hong Kong. If you qualify, you don’t have to secure a job before travelling to the country.\u00a0The scheme has a quota<\/strong> and works on a points-based system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Restrictions<\/h2>\n

While the\u00a0average monthly salaries\u00a0are about HK$15,000<\/strong> (US$1,935), foreigners tend to earn more<\/strong> since they are hired typically in positions that can\u2019t be filled by the local labour force<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The statutory minimum wage for non-domestic workers is HK$34.5<\/strong>\u00a0(~US$4.43) per hour.<\/p>\n

After 12 continuous months of employment, Hong Kong workers are entitled to 7 days annual leave<\/strong>, with this progressing to 14 days<\/strong> according to length of service.<\/p>\n
